Go Motorcycling, Inc. and MANYS are always looking for experienced, qualified
motorcyclists to become Motorcycle Safety Foundation Certified RiderCoaches
to support our growing Rider Education program.
RiderCoaches are the
backbone of the RiderCourse training system, and becoming certified involves
a high level of commitment and motivation, and should not be entered into
casually. Keep reading to learn more about this exciting training process.
About the
Training
Completing an intensive 8 – 9 day RiderCoach Preparation Course
is
one of the main requirements for becoming a RiderCoach.
During the RCP you’ll
learn how to teach the BRC curriculum. You’ll practice teaching
in the classroom. You’ll learn how to manage the range exercises
and how to evaluate and coach students as they develop their riding skills.
When the training
portion of the RCP is completed, you will take a knowledge test. You must
pass the test in order to continue in the course. You will also
be required
to pass a riding skills test. It is the same test administered in the
BRC; however, the passing criteria are higher for RiderCoach Candidates.
The course culminates
in a practical exam where you and your classmates
will teach the BRC to
a group of novice riders. Successful completion of this student teaching
is your final requirement to qualify for MSF RiderCoach certification.
In order to teach
at NYS Licensed Driving School Sites (such as Go Motorcycling, Inc.),
MSF Certified RiderCoaches will also have to take a
DMV Instructor Test
and Road Test to receive their NYS Driving School Instructor License.
Still Interested?
In the year before your RiderCourse, you will interviewed by training
site and MANYS representatives; you will be required to participate as
a student in a BRC (so that we may assess your skills, and you may assess
your interest level), and you will be given a pre-course assignment. The
pre-course assignment is distributed a few weeks before the start of your
Coach Prep to assist you in becoming familiar with the course materials
and structure of the BRC.
Let’s
See if You’re Qualified…
The following prerequisites are a combination of MSF and NYS DMV requirements
to be considered for enrollment in a RiderCoach Prep:
- You must be a
licensed motorcyclist who rides on a frequent, routine basis.
- You must have
held a driver’s license for at least 3 years, and a motorcycle
endorsement for at least 2 years.
- You must be at
least 21 years of age at the start of your RiderCoach Prep.
- You must have had
no driver’s license suspension or revocation within the 5 years
prior to becoming a RiderCoach (with the exception of an indefinite
suspension which can be terminated by the performance
of an act by the
licensee) and no alcohol related driving conviction
within the seven
years prior to becoming a RiderCoach.
- You must have
a high school or equivalency diploma.
- You will need
to provide MANYS your Social Security Number.
- You must have
not been convicted of a felony or crime involving dishonesty, degeneracy,
moral turpitude, deceit, or fraud, including but not limited to theft,
forgery, making false written statements, rape, perjury, fraud or bribery.
- You must be physically
competent and capable to conduct classroom and on-cycle instruction,
including technically correct riding demonstrations.
Still With
Us?
Phew! If that seems like a lot of work, you’re right! Getting certified
to teach
the RiderCourse Curriculum takes a big commitment of your time,
mental
and physical energy & some money (MANYS charges a fee for training.)
There’s a big payout at the back end, though; teaching RiderCourses
is
about as much fun as you can have (besides riding, of course!) and
extremely rewarding. And you get paid! Not enough to get rich, but enough
to make it worth your while (You’ll make back your RiderCoach Prep
Tuition
in just a couple of courses)
So, if you’re
ready to make a commitment to have fun, promote safer motorcycling and
earn some extra income, you might be interested in joining our team. Give
me a call - I look forward to hearing from you!
