Who can take the Basic

RiderCourse students must be at least 16 years of age and be able to ride a bicycle in order to participate. Students under the age of 18 will need to have their parent or guardian’s signature on the New York State Motorcycle Safety Program waiver. The parent or guardian can accompany the student to class and sign the form in the presence of the RiderCoach (with appropriate ID) or the student can bring a signed and notarized form to class with them.

Where are the courses
offered?
Go Motorcycling, Inc. has training sites in Utica and Rome at the Mohawk
Valley Community College Campuses and in Watertown at Jefferson Community
College.
What is the Basic RiderCourse Schedule?
In Utica & Rome, our training season runs from late April thru October. In Watertown, our training season is limited to late May thru late August.
Most of our BRCs are scheduled over a 2-½ day period: an evening,
followed by two full days. If you are brand-new to motorcycling, we
recommend that you choose this schedule as it allows the most practice
time.
If you have some riding experience (for example, you have been riding with your permit, you ride or used to ride dirt bikes, you are returning to riding
after an absence), you might want to take the BRC scheduled over a 2-day period. This schedule moves along at a faster pace than the 2-½ day
schedule and is well-suited to those with prior experience.
Whichever schedule you choose, the course content is the same, and both schedules allow participants to qualify for the NYS road test waiver.
You can see the full schedule, plus availability for each location, by clicking here.
How many students are
in a class?
There are no more than 12 students in each BRC or BRC2 class (with two RiderCoaches); the IME class size is limited to 3 students.
What kind of motorcycles
do we use?
All of our training motorcycles are under 250cc’s. Some of our current
models are Suzuki’s GZ250 and Kawasaki’s BN125. Each student
has its
own motorcycle to ride during the course.

Can I ride my personal
motorcycle during the course?
It is recommended that BRC students use our training motorcycles during the course. Students may use their own motorcycles or scooters if they meet certain criteria.
BRC2 students are licensed riders and generally use their own motorcycles
for training.
What do I need to bring to class?
All students need proper riding gear: sturdy non-flared long pants (no holey knees please!), over-the-ankle
footwear (like a hiking boot or a work boot),
full-fingered gloves, and
a jacket. You may bring your own motorcycle helmet and eye protection,
so long as they meet DOT standards. We can lend you a helmet with eye
protection if you do not have one of your own.
You will also need to bring a photocopy of your license and permit and the originals.
BRC2 students will also need
to bring their motorcycle, and its registration
and insurance card.
You’ll get
specific details on what to bring once you are enrolled.
Does training take
place in all kinds of weather?
Yes, the courses will take place during “normal” rainy conditions,
so come prepared with a rainsuit if rain is imminent. Classes will be
canceled/rescheduled in the event of severe weather – your RiderCoaches
will make that determination that day, so you should show up for class
no matter what.
Do I need my motorcycle
learner’s permit to participate?
You do not need your motorcycle permit to register, but New York residents are required to have a valid motorcycle learner's permit (or a valid motorcycle license) by the time their class starts in order to participate. Out-of-state participants will need a license or permit from their home state in order to enroll/participate. Out-of-state participants should check with their home state's DMV regarding licensing eligibility though a New York State BRC.
How do I get a learner’s
permit?
Learner’s permits are obtained at local DMV offices. You will be
required
to take a 20 question, multiple-choice quiz testing your knowledge
of the
rules of the road and motorcycling. You can study for your quiz
by reviewing
the DMV
Car and Motorcycle
Operator’s Manuals.
How do I qualify for
the Motorcycle Road Test Waiver?
You will need to have a valid NY State driver’s license and a motorcycle
learner’s permit that are valid during your course dates - and for
about one month after your course dates or until you amend your license - in order to be eligible. Students
who possess these documents and who successfully complete their RiderCourse
are eligible for the Road Test Waiver.
Do I get my motorcycle
license when I complete the course?
Not that instant, but almost. Successful students will receive a NYSMSP BRC completion card. You will need to bring this card, along with your license and motorcycle learner's permit to the DMV to amend our license. Until you go to the DMV and amend your license, you are still just a permit holder.
What if I don’t
pass my BRC knowledge or skills evaluation?
BRC students who fail either the written or skills evaluations will be
given an opportunity to re-test at no charge. Re-tests must be taken within
30 days
of your course completion date.
Are there any special physical requirements?*
Riding a motorcycle requires alertness, coordination, balance, grip and fine muscle control of the hands and feet. Certain medical conditions, recent surgery or injury and/or certain prescription or over-the-counter drugs may interfere with safe motorcycle operation. If you have a history of dizzy
spells, fainting, seizures, epilepsy, muscular, balance/inner ear or other physical or stress related problems, are recovering from recent injury or surgery and/or are taking prescription or over-the-counter medications, it is imperative that you consult with your doctor or pharmacist before the course to determine if your medical condition, or the drugs that you are taking for it, could interfere with your ability to operate a motorcycle.
*If you feel that there are motor skill ability, age, physical condition or
language limitations that may limit your ability to learn to ride, please feel
free to contact our office to discuss what provision can be made to assist
you.
If you have a particularly long or short inseam, please contact our office to determine if you will fit on our training motorcycles.
Does anyone ever cancel? Can I get into an earlier class?
If you would be interested and available to move to an earlier course date
than the one for which you are scheduled:
a) Check back on our website periodically; additional classes may be added and/or cancellations by other students may create an earlier opening.
b) If you would like to be considered for last minute fill-ins (within 24 hours of a class start date/time), please email us with your preferences. You might specify a particular date that you desire or a general interest in an earlier
date - please specify if you are available weekends or weekdays – and we
will put you on the cancellation list.
