12 students ready to goThe Basic RiderCourse (BRC) was developed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) as a comprehensive riding program for the beginner rider. Taught by Go Motorcycling, Inc.’s MSF and NYS DMV certified RiderCoaches, the course consists of 5 hours of interactive classroom learning and at least 10 hours of hands-on riding instruction.

The BRC provides the beginning motorcyclist with the basic mental and physical riding skills necessary to minimize risk on the street.

In the classroom you’ll learn about:

  • different types of motorcycles
  • how they operate
  • what to wear for comfort and protection
  • how to develop a riding strategy for dealing with traffic and road hazards
  • how alcohol and other drugs can affect your ability to ride safely.

ExplanationThe BRC’s riding exercises cover:

  • straight-line riding
  • shifting
  • braking
  • cornering and swerving techniques
  • motorcycle dynamics

Each class is limited to 12 students with 2 RiderCoaches. Learning is a fun, step-by-step process in a secured lot on our user-friendly training motorcycles.

EliminatorGo Motorcycling, Inc. provides:

  • motorcycles
  • helmets
  • eye protection
  • course materials

Your gearYou need to provide your own
riding gear:

  • sturdy, non-flared long pants
  • sturdy, over-the-ankle footwear
  • jacket
  • full-fingered gloves
  • if necessary, raingear

You must be at least 16 years of age to participate. Students under the age of 18 will require their parent or guardian’s signature on their NYSMSP application. (Details here)

New York State residents must possess a valid motorcycle learner’s permit to participate. Out-of-state participants must have a valid license or permit
(car or motorcycle) from their home state.

The ability to ride a bicycle is a requirement for admission to the BRC.

Most of our BRCs are scheduled over a 2-½ day period: an evening, followed by two full days. If you are brand-new to motorcycling, we recommend that you choose this schedule as it allows the most practice time.

If you have some riding experience (for example, you have been riding with your permit, you ride or used to ride dirt bikes, you are returning to riding after an absence), you might want to take the BRC scheduled over a 2-day period. This schedule moves along at a faster pace than the 2-½ day schedule and is well suited to those with prior experience.

Whichever schedule you choose, the course content is the same, and both schedules allow participants to qualify for the NYS road test waiver.

Under certain circumstances, a student may elect to use his or her own motorcycle (or scooter) in a BRC; click here for details.

Introductory Motorcycle Experience
Never been on a motorcycle before? Not sure if riding a motorcycle is for you? Nervous? Consider taking the Introductory Motorcycle Experience as a jump start to the BRC. The entire 2-hour class is "hands-on" and limited to just three participants. You'll learn about the primary parts and controls of a motorcycle and be given the opportunity to power-walk, operating the controls while astride the motorcycle. It's a taste of riding without a big investment of time or money. Find out of riding is for you and if you have the basic skills needed to be prepared for the Basic RiderCourse.
